Project Profiles CHICAGO CHEM CONSULTANTS CORPORATION FORENSIC ENGINEERING - INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS Investigated major accidents, one involving a chemical burn fatality and a second resulting in a serious burn injury with disfigurement from a reactor explosion. Root cause of the accidents were determined, and corrective actions developed jointly with production facilities. CCC assisted both facilities in upgrading safety and operating procedures. ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX SITING - SAFETY HAZOP EVALUATION Evaluation Building permits for a $100 million riverside entertainment complex were denied due to adjacent bulk chemical storage facility with a history of significant accidents. CCC examined and quantified risk through air emission modeling, explosion and immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) exposure modeling. Reviewed and evaluated chemical storage operations and compliance history. CCC engineers put a dollar value to the risk and recommended improved chemical storage safety practices, protective measures for the entertainment complex, and fair value purchase of land. Presentation to State regulatory commission allowed timely opening of entertainment complex with mutually successful outcome for all parties. RCRA EMERGENCY CONTINGENCY PLAN Provided technical assistance in the review and modification of a RCRA Part B permit. Included examination and modification of chemical process flow diagrams and accident scenario evaluations. FORENSIC ENGINEERING - PREMATURE PRODUCT FAILURE Determined the cause of premature corrosion failure seen in certain buried electrical boxes. This work, performed for a national manufacturer of these products, involved investigation of soil corrosion parameters as well as electron microscopy of before and after metal box samples. These studies identified the root cause to be manufacturing defects in the galvanizing process as well as corrosive soil conditions. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF MANUFACTURING PLANT AND RECOMMENDATIONS Assisted the buyer in an environmental and technical evaluation of a metal products manufacturing company. The manufacturing process involved lead metal fabrication and casting. Worked with the regulators, remediation companies, and both the seller and buyer's attorneys and consultants to examine the company's regulatory compliance and health and safety programs. The project resulted in the identification of major existing and potential environmental problems along with recommendations for their remediation. This information was used by the buyer to successfully negotiate a fair purchase price which covered remedial action costs such as removal of an underground storage tank and removal of lead contaminated soil for on-site recycling. ELECTRO-FINISHING BUSINESS ACQUISITION STUDY Assisted California buyer in selecting and purchasing a plating and anodizing company with $5 - 10 million of sales. Evaluated three companies for business economics, environmental compliance, production, and health and safety. Determined which company was the best purchase. Formulated acquisition plan including production recommendation and cleanup plan that was accepted by California Environmental Protection Agency. Assisted with acquisition negotiations. Acquisition plan was executed and the resulting company was so successful that it opened an additional grassroots state-of-the-art facility two years after the purchase. BUSINESS ACQUISITION - REFINERY ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE REVIEW Completed expanded Phase I Environmental Site Assessment including an examination of environmental and health and safety operational history and future compliance needs of a national lube oil re-refining company on behalf of international investment firm to support further financial investment. Services included a review of current and past operations and the development of recommendations for addressing State mandated soil remediation. Validated financial budget requests for environmental activities prior to further investment. OSHA LOCKOUT/TAGOUT COMPLIANCE MANUAL FOR CHEMICAL REFINERY Developed a complete OSHA Lockout/Tagout compliance manual for a major Chicago chemical company. This work included an extensive evaluation of chemical processes, interviews with plant maintenance, safety and environmental management. The work resulted in a site-specific compliance manual set up for the clients needs in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.147. REMEDIATION COMPANY BUSINESS EVALUATION Performed a business evaluation for an Ohio based remedial action company. This involved interviews with key employees and the evaluation of project management, marketing, sales and operations. The evaluation identified areas of concern and provided specific recommendations, including sales and marketing strategies, to assist the company in achieving its' goal of increasing business from $4 million to $20 million over the next 4 years. WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT EVALUATION Project included evaluation of wastewater treatment system for a 30% plant operations expansion at a 600-person Locomotive Rebuilding Facility utilizing 20 hot/alkaline partwashing operations. Wastewater treatment plant discharge was at discharge limits for lead and oil and grease. CCC identified wastewater treatment system upgrade options including improved sludge collection, improved pH adjustment, better degreaser maintenance, recycle of steam condensate to boiler, and ultrafiltration of partwashing effluent to accommodate the 30% plant operations expansion. Subsequent ultrafiltration pilot study is discussed in "Pilot/Treatability Studies". WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM STARTUP AND TROUBLESHOOTING |
