2. Bill Holley, PE joins CCC

After 25 years in industry, Bill has joined the CCC team. He brings a wealth of chemical engineering plant operations. Bill took early retirement from Proctor and Gamble - Gillette in North Chicago. We asked Bill to sum up his successful approach at P&G, and here is his response, best summed up in his own words -

Anatomy of a Project - Bill Holley, PE

My role in a typical project usually begins with preliminary design work based on input from process development chemists and Q/A personnel. Based on this work I would provide a cost estimate for the project. I would then facilitate pilot scale work as needed with the development chemists. I would eventually submit a request for funding based on my cost estimate. Concurrently with the funding request I usually develop a preliminary project schedule (using MS Project) and P&ID (using Autocad ). I meet with all interested personnel including management, safety & environmental, process development, and management until all are satisfied that their needs are met. I initiate equipment design/specification and infrastructure work as soon as the design can be "frozen" enough to begin construction. I specify and order all equipment, including instrumentation. I hire and supervise mechanical and electrical contractors as needed. I am usually very "hands on" and monitor construction work closely to minimize problems. I am familiar with GMP validation, ISO, PSM, OSHA, etc. requirements and procedures and as the work progresses I continue to work with process development, Q/A, and production personnel to address any issues. Depending on the schedule, I either handle the Honeywell process control programming myself, or provide input to another engineer. After installation of equipment, I am responsible for initial operator training and supervision of initial production runs. If the project is large enough, I can and have utilized other engineers to assist and I have no problem delegating work to others. I prefer to delegate as much as possible so that I can stay focused on project management and supervision.

Bill has brought with him this winning approach to Chicago Chem Consultants Corp - welcome aboard, Bill!
