Project Profiles CHICAGO CHEM CONSULTANTS CORPORATION SLURRY DRYING UPGRADE Worked with client team to identify and prioritize new slurry drying options. Technology identified to meet space and budget restrictions in addition to product quality requirements. Provided technical guidance to improve production and qualitative analyses during pilot test. CHEMICAL MIXING PILOT STUDY CCC client process required multiple slurry mixing and extraction steps to recover final solids product by filtration. Existing mixer could not break up solid cake dispersion and required time consuming operator hands on involvement. CCC designed and coordinated on-site mixing study with vendors. Follow on propeller study supervised at vendor application development center led to selection and procurement of successful, automated mixing and feed system for both existing and new pharmaceutical operation. DE-GREASING PARTWASHER - ULTRAFILTRATION WASTEWATER TREATMENT Ultrafiltration of partwasher effluent was one of the recommendations to retrofit an at-capacity wastewater treatment plant for a 30% plant operations expansion at a 600-person Locomotive Rebuilding Facility utilizing 20 hot/alkaline partwashing operations (see "Plant Operations" for more information). Performed ultrafiltration pilot study at facility and provided recommendations for a separation system to recover and recycle the soap/water mixture from de-greasing partwashers. Economics indicate a 6 - 10 month payback period. SUPERFUND TREATABILITY STUDIES Performed treatability studies as part of Superfund cleanup of site involving used lube oil, sulfuric acid, and chlorinated solvent soil contamination. CCC contracted and provided oversight of triethylamine extraction, liquid propane extraction, and various thermal desorption treatability studies performed by vendors. Performed soil vapor extraction (SVE), liquefaction of oily wastes, and spent carbon treatability studies in CCC's on-site mobile laboratory. CCC developed a successful SVE process for treatment of perchloroethylene and a second SVE process for treatment of an acid tar. A combination of thermal desorption and SVE was implemented in on-going project. Developed analytical methods that exceed SW-846 methods for accuracy. Please see "Remediation and Treatment Engineering" for more information. PCB TREATABILITY STUDY/REMEDIAL ACTION TECHNOLOGY SELECTION Assisted a major remediation company in winning a $6 million cleanup contract for the remediation of a three million gallon tank containing an oil-water mixture contaminated with over 500 mg/kg of PCBs. Performed site inspection, tank sampling, treatability study, and preliminary remedial design engineering which led to a least-cost remediation process emphasizing volume reduction. Assisted the client with a least cost successful remediation proposal and presentation. CONTAMINATED SOILS TREATABILITY STUDY Performed lab study to develop a remediation pretreatment process emphasizing volume reduction of oily steel mill waste through physical separation. Basic Extraction Sludge Technology (B.E.S.T) developed by Boeing Aircraft and marketed by Resource Conservation Corporation was evaluated. |
