REPRESENTATIVE POLLUTION PREVENTION AND WASTE MINIMIZATION PROJECT PROFILES

VITAMIN PLANT EXPANSION
Subcontractor on process environmental technology team for $400 million pharmaceutical plant expansion performed by John Brown/Davy McKee Engineers and Constructors. Over 10% of project was allocated to environmental operations including vapor recovery, liquid segregation, solvent recycle, thermal oxidizer and rotating biological contactor (RBC) systems for wastewater treatment. Worked with chemical process design engineering team on all process/environmental tie-ins.

DE-GREASING PARTWASHER - WASTEWATER AND SOAP RECYCLING
CCC provided conceptual engineering designs for oil/soap recovery unit for major locomotive rebuild shop. Designed system to service 20 large hot alkaline partwashers based around ultrafiltration. System design and process economic evaluation based on our shop floor pilot study results (see "Pilot/Treatability Studies") indicated 6-10 month payback on chemical costs, water use, recycle of recovered oil and greater than 50% reduction in wastewater treatment plant loadings. Design featured user friendly system based on 3 month study conducted with client personnel to maximize operator input and acceptance.

CERTIFIED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS MANAGER REVIEW COURSE
Dr. Perl, in conjunction with the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Academy of Hazardous Materials Managers, developed and led a 3-day review course for the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) examination from 1988-92. These courses were presented approximately ten times per year at various locations around the country including Chicago, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington DC to over 1,000 students. The program was donated to IIT in 1992. Dr. Perl continues to lecture on pollution prevention and remediation design engineering for IIT in Chicago twice a year.

CLEANUP AND REPACKAGING OF PRODUCT DAMAGED IN SHIPMENT
Supervised the cleanup and repackaging of an aluminum paint pigment additive shipment damaged in transit. A cleanup and product recovery plan was worked out with warehouse management and a treatment and disposal company on behalf of the manufacturer. Careful inspection and handling allowed nearly half of the product to be used for its original purpose.

WASTEWATER MONITORING ANALYTICAL METHODS DEVELOPMENT
Developed gas chromatography method and standards in support of ongoing wastewater treatment pollution prevention/waste minimization program. This project was performed for a major national chemical, food and pharmaceutical company.
