CCC 2009 Project Highlights

CCC continues to assist in chemical process engineering and design, renewable resource development, forensic engineering, environmentally challenged real estate property transfer, litigation and legal support as demonstrated in the following excerpts from 2009. At the heart of all is a focus on chemical process engineering with regards to competent environment, safety and occupational health compliance.

Forensic Engineering Process Failure Expert Witness - Carry over from 2008 review of our client’s failed chemical process. Served as testifying expert witness, evaluating chemical process equipment design, performance and contract requirements on behalf of owner. Conducted additional process design mathematical modeling, participated in deposition of other sides expert as well as CCC Dr. Jeff Perl, led to a successful, “….very amicable.….” pre-trial settlement for our client.

Bio-Based Product Process Engineering Review - Assist international client in determining root cause of failed process environmental air emission control system. Reviews of P&ID, PFD, EPA permit and VOC release modeling as well as coordination of design specification and data with original design engineers to identify root cause of design and process failure.

New Agribusiness-Based Consumer Product Development – Carry over from 2008 Assist international company in engineering a process developed by US-based worldwide agribusiness. Used and new plant equipment specification and acquisition assistance. Pilot study monitoring, review and validation, from lab to plant scale. Translate original process design to meet overseas CCC client requirements. Review and coordinate rebuilding of key process equipment with original equipment manufacture, identify and locate used plant equipment to expedite process development. Coordinate development of process project cost estimates and timelines to expedite manufacture of this worldwide commercial product.

UIC – Chemical Engineering Design – CCC founder and president Dr. Jeffery P Perl, PhD, PE, CHMM, was appointed Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dr. Perl is now into his second year teaching the two-semester senior chemical engineering process design course at UIC. The second half of the course focuses on practical chemical process design engineering with six projects mentored by numerous Chicago area senior design engineers from UOP, Middough, Ambitech and Jacobs Consultancy most of whom Dr. Perl has worked with over the past 20 years of practice. http://www.uic.edu/depts/chme/faculty.htm

Environmental Cleanup and Regulatory Plan Review – Carry over from 2008. Assist International manufacturer of lubricants in reviewing and evaluating environmental remediation plans at former US site in advance of property transfer. Review of federal, state and local regulations as well as technology assessment of contractor proposed cleanups. Assist client in meetings with contractors and regulators.

Forensic Engineering Study – Medical Diagnostic Equipment Failure – Carry over from 2008. Ongoing forensic investigation of medical testing equipment to ascertain medical electronic diagnostic lab equipment failure modes. Coordinate chemical testing and lab evaluation to identify contamination source and recommend manufacturing improvements to eliminate causes. Contaminant particle size, composition and possible sources were identified. Telecon and written support to our client’s European partner regarding report findings and CCC manufacturing upgrade recommendations.

New Fertilizer Product – Commence pre-manufacturing notice submittal with USEPA for new, micronutrient crop fertilizer product. Initial submittal USEPA, Chemical Abstract Service number obtained as well as numerous conferences to assist USEPA in understanding the new product’s safety in meeting regulatory requirements. USEPA drop decision expected early 2010.
